About me
Dr Ong is an eearly-career researcher in MicroTissue Engineering Lab, Queensland University of Technology (QUT) led by A/Prof Yi-Chin Toh. Dr Ong has a good track record in integrating advance manufacturing technologies to develop micro-physiological platforms enabling drug testing and disease modelling, compatible for industry workflow. Dr Ong’s innovative approach has resulted in up to 8 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles (with total citations of 136 and h-index = 3, 75% in the top 25% journals ranked by Scientific Journal Ranking), 1 patent applications and more than 7 conference presentations to date. Dr Ong’s work on the modular physiological platforms has resulted in the generation of a patent and has attracted various commercial interests. His recent has gain multiple industry interest including Cynata and CELLINK. Dr Ong’s recent work won the 26th International Conference on Miniaturised Systems for Chemistry and Life Sciences (MicroTAS) Best Talk Award in 2022. His work was also a featured presentation in the international 2021 MicroTAS conference. He is frequently invited to review in various leading scientific journals such as Lab on a Chip, Nature materials, Biofabrications and Biotechnology and Bioengineering. He is also the recipient of the 2021 QUT Early-Career Researcher grant and School of Mechanical, Medical and Process Engineering (MMPE) ECR grant amounting to a total of 60, 000 AUD. He is also a co-lead investigator for the 2023 Discovery Project funded by the prestigious Australian Research Council (ARC). Dr Ong is also highly active as an educator, where he lectured in 2 units in QUT for year 1 (>185 students) and year 3 (>60 students) engineering students. He has mentored a total of 21 research students and supervised 1 Ph.D. student.
