About Us

The School of Veterinary Medicine at Murdoch University provides Western Australia’s only Veterinary Science course and is responsible for the training and development of graduates within our internationally recognised degree programme. Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care is a key section within the School of Veterinary Medicine and provides excellence in clinical care for animals presented to The Animal Hospital whilst teaching skills and knowledge to undergraduate veterinary students and veterinarians specialising in the discipline.

The Role

An Associate Professor makes a considerable contribution to the University’s postgraduate supervision and is expected to play a leadership role in University administration. It is also expected that the successful candidate possesses a track record of academic excellence, with high quality research that has national and/or international impact, and links to relevant industry groups and external stakeholders that will advance the interests of the discipline and the University. You will have four key duties or teaching, clinical practice, clinical or professional practice (research engagement), and service and leadership.

Teaching

• Develop and practice innovative teaching and learning methods within the discipline of VECC.

• Mentor and support Level A, B and C teaching staff within the discipline of VECC and other specialist areas.

• Supervise and mentor Residents, and as required Honours and coursework Masters students.

• Lead the development and design of curriculum and/or programs of study.


Clinical Practice

• At Associate Professor level, clinical academics are expected to lead a team.

• Provide a professional clinical service, including after-hours, to emergency and critical care patients of The Animal Hospital at Murdoch University, to provide professional advice to veterinarians within the veterinary hospital, and externally.

• Provide high level specialist clinical service in the diagnosis and management of small animal (dogs and cat) emergency and critical care cases in The Animal Hospital at Murdoch University.

• Directly supervise emergency and critical care residents for the purposes of “Immersion” requirements for residency training.

Clinical or Professional Practice - Research Engagement

• Make a substantial contribution to research, individually and as head of section. Research outputs should have national and/or international impact.

• Design and lead clinical research relevant to veterinary emergency & critical care, including successful applications for external research funding, publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals, and demonstrating impacts on clinical practice.

• Contribute to School strategic priorities in research and partner with other researchers within the school and external to the school (within MU and elsewhere).

Service and Leadership

• Make a substantial contribution to the School, the University, the profession, and the discipline.

• Engage with industry and other external stakeholders to develop partnerships and progress the interests of the College and the University.

• Make a substantial contribution to service, at both College and University level, by undertaking specific administrative, planning and/or committee work.

• Participate in the University’s Academic Contribution Development Review (ACDR).

Selection criteria
What you’ll bring to this role


· Veterinary degree registrable by the Veterinary Surgeons’ Board of Western Australia, board certification and a PhD in an area relevant to appointment.

· A professional qualification (Dip ACVECC, Dip ECVECC or FANZCVS) that would allow registration as a specialist in emergency and critical care in Western Australia, and the ability to supervise emergency and critical care residents.

· Extensive teaching experience at an undergraduate and postgraduate level.

· Proven record of success in producing high quality independent research outputs; with international impact and influence.

· Demonstrated success in attracting external competitive research funding that has national/international impact.

· High level of achievement in successfully supervising honours, Masters by Coursework, HDR, and postgraduate students to completion.

· Experience in the application of curriculum design and pedagogy; with substantial experience in leading and designing study programs.
