The Role

As The Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research and Innovation (DVC-R&I), you will be a key member of the University’s senior leadership team, with the opportunity to influence the overall strategic direction of the University and to build on the current focus areas of health futures, food futures, and business and environment, whilst ensuring the University continues to build its reputation for achieving significant, meaningful research outcomes, sustained by strong funding streams and partnerships.

DVC(R&I) leads and aids the building of quality, quantity and impact of research and the development of the University’s innovation, entrepreneurship, and knowledge transfer activities in support of the University’s strategy.

You will steer the development of a strong innovation ecosystem, promoting the commercialization of university research and the development of innovation and entrepreneurship skills amongst our students and staff. The DVC(R&I) currently has responsibility for the Murdoch University Graduate Research School, and for assisting the graduate research student experience and helping to build the graduate research student numbers.

You will be active in developing closer research links and a funding base with both private and public sector users and providers. In addition, the DVC-R&I will promote research for the public good and will educate the public about the benefits of research and its contribution to society.

The DVC(R&I) will maintain an ongoing teaching and/or research contribution during their term.

Selection criteria

What you’ll bring to this role

  • A PhD degree or equivalent,
  • An excellent research reputation and track record at Professorial level, including an outstanding record of high quality, impactful publications, competitive research grant success and research leadership.
  • Demonstrated success in a senior leadership role in a university.
  • A strong understanding of the higher education sector, especially in relation to research, innovation and research training,
  • Experience of innovation, knowledge transfer and enterprise activities.
  • Strong networks with peers, research support bodies, government agencies and private companies, preferably with existing networks at the Australian state and national level,
  • A track record of negotiation and influencing skills and developing strategic relationships with key stakeholders
