About this role

About the Team

  • The Head of College of Environmental and Life Sciences comprises of the following disciplines:
  • School of Agricultural Sciences
  • School of Environmental and Conservation Sciences
  • School of Medical, Molecular and Forensic Sciences
  • School of Veterinary Medicine

The Role

As the Head of College, you will report directly to the Vice Chancellor (VC) and act as an integral member of the University’s senior leadership team.

You will provide important strategic and operational oversight and support to the Schools within the College in relation to planning and budgeting; financial management; management of the academic portfolio; research support, workforce planning, management, and development; and workload policy and its implementation. Utilising your key leadership skills, you will be the line manager for the Heads of the Schools within the College and any Deputy Heads of College appointed. Acting as a full member of the University senior leadership team, you will contribute to the strategic direction and management of the University as a whole, bringing the perspectives of the constituent Schools to the senior leadership team and the views of the senior leadership team to the constituent Schools.

The Head of College will maintain an active teaching and/or research profile during the term of their role.


Selection criteria
  • An academic track record in teaching and/or research which inspires academic colleagues.
  • Demonstrated accomplishment in innovative strategy development, leadership, implementation, and management in the higher education sector.
  • In-depth knowledge of the tertiary education sector, including the tertiary education landscape, academic processes including quality assurance and accreditation, legislation, and equity principles.
  • Demonstrated evidence of student-centred values and experience in student matters including complaints, misconduct, and equity related issues.
  • A record of success in leading and managing teams and individuals in pursuit of the achievement of organisational goals and objectives.
  • A demonstrated commitment to collegial work practices, development of staff capability for adaptability, resiliency, high-level achievement, and promotion of a results-oriented and continuous improvement culture.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply collaborative processes in a timely manner to meet University governance, academic and administrative requirements.
  • Demonstrated capability in the leadership of quality research and learning and teaching, through high-level written and oral communication skills, including influencing, facilitating, presenting, active listening, providing constructive feedback and capacity to work effectively with others and build strong partnerships with colleagues, academic and administrative units, and external stakeholders.
  • Alignment with the University’s foundation principles and values.
  • An excellent academic track record at Professor level.
  • A successful track record as Head of School or equivalent.
