About our institution
Why the School of Design and the Built Environment?

Architecture within the School has embarked on intentional renewal and recalibration. We are now seeking applications for two Senior Lecturers in Architecture who will provide academic leadership as Course Coordinator and Discipline Co-Leader, based on the Bentley campus in Perth. Successful candidates will work across the nexus of academia and architecture; those who can contribute to strengthening design practice curricula, support practice-based inquiry, and ensure that socially-engaged and country-responsive approaches are meaningfully embedded across undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

EXPLORE DBE VIDEO

DBE is the only school of its kind in Australia, bringing together an exceptional breadth of design, planning, construction, and creative disciplines. This diversity underpins our ability to deliver real-world impact, informed by strong commitments to social justice, ethical practice, and environmental responsibility.

DBE’s teaching, research, and creative practice are grounded in rigorous inquiry, critical experimentation, and meaningful engagement with industry, communities, and global partners. Our staff, students, and alumni are recognised for their work that pushes boundaries, reframes problems, and translates disruption into opportunity; with responsibility to both people and planet at the core.

Why Perth?

Located on Whadjuk Noongar Country, Perth (Boorloo) is one of the world’s most distinctive urban and environmental contexts: A globally connected city set within an extraordinary natural landscape. Positioned on the Indian Ocean rim, Perth offers direct cultural, intellectual, and creative pipelines to Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and the Global South.

The natural environment and culture are extensions of the studio that enable a rare balance between ambitious professional practice and quality of life. Renowned for its Mediterranean climate and relaxed lifestyle, Perth combines cosmopolitan culture with immediate access to exceptional environments. White sandy beaches, the Swan River, world-class sports venues, the historic port of Fremantle with a bohemian heart for artists and makers, and the internationally celebrated vineyards of Margaret River are all within easy reach.

Perth’s strong indigenous presence, respected cultural institutions, and rapidly expanding creative industries provide a rich community for collaboration, place-based research and impact. For creative practice leaders, Perth offers a rare "space to think and freedom to make" far from the congestion and constraint of other global centres.

Why Curtin University?

Ranked in the top 1% of universities globally (QS 2025), Curtin is recognised for impact-driven research. Situated on Whadjuk Nyungar Country, our Bentley campus is a vibrant hub of industry integration and future-focused education, committed to transforming global disruption into meaningful innovation. Its commitment to innovation, social responsibility, and real-world impact makes it a compelling environment for ambitious academic and creative practice leaders.

The Bentley campus includes an art gallery, gym, childcare and medical centre, bus station, accessible parking and endless food options including a supermarket. Curtin is a welcoming space where integrity, respect for one another, courage, excellence, and impact are essential to everyday life. First Nations people, those identifying as LGBTQIA+, parents, carers, people of all ages, abilities and genders, and people of diverse ethnicity, nationality and faith are encouraged to apply. Our aim is to create a workforce that reflects the diversity of the community in which we live.

About this role

Architecture at DBE is grounded in socially engaged design practice, design-led research, and a strong commitment to Country-led and Indigenous-informed approaches. Teaching and research are shaped by critical questions of housing equity, climate responsiveness, cultural accountability, and ethical practice. Studios and research projects are developed through genuine collaboration with communities, industry, and Indigenous partners, embedding design practice as a rigorous mode of inquiry.

The successful applicant will play a central role in leading and coordinating the Architecture program, ensuring curriculum coherence across undergraduate and postgraduate courses, strengthening studio culture, and supporting high-quality student experiences. The role includes leadership of teaching teams, mentoring of early- and mid-career academics, and responsibility for alignment with accreditation and professional standards.

A key expectation of the role is the integration of design practice research into teaching and scholarship. The Senior Lecturer will contribute to the development of practice-based research pathways, support staff and students engaged in design-led inquiry, and advance socially engaged and Country-responsive approaches across the curriculum.

Located on Whadjuk Noongar Country, Perth offers a distinctive context for architectural education and research. The city’s environmental conditions, urban growth challenges, and strong Indigenous presence provide rich opportunities for place-responsive studios, community-engaged research, and design practice grounded in real social and environmental contexts. DBE maintains strong relationships with Indigenous organisations, industry partners, government, and cultural institutions, enabling architecture to be taught and practiced as a publicly engaged discipline.

This role provides genuine academic leadership, not simply administrative coordination. It offers the opportunity to shape the direction and culture of Architecture in Perth, contribute to DBE’s interdisciplinary environment, and play a visible role in a school committed to ethical, socially responsible, and forward-looking design education.
